College is this thing to every highschooler. It's this entity, this far off beacon, this attainable common goal. And for some reason, we are trained to think that if we get through highschool making honor roll and keeping up a good GPA, everything will fall into place. We will go to college, graduate, get a great job, and marry and have pretty babies. I'm beginning to find that this is not so much the case.
When you're applying to colleges, there is always that urban legend that circulates and causes mass hysteria and panick. It varies, but the message and basic plot is always the same. The boy/girl who got great grades, had a 4.0 gpa, did extra-curriculars, fucking tried to save the world on a daily basis, and applied to amazing schools. and didnt get into a single one. Not that i fit all the criteria listed above, but this past month my life has turned into that ubran legend.
I didn't get into my dream school, in fact, i only got into 3 out of 9, all 3 of which i really didn't want to go to. And then to add to that, i realized that even if i did get into my dream schools, i probably couldnt afford to go anyway. So, i am now a member of the Umass Amherst class of 2013, which is more fucking ironic than you could believe. My whole mantra throughout high school was i don't want to go to umass, never umass, anything but umass. I think i didnt want to stay in state, and i didnt want to go to what i considered an inferior school. i wanted to go out west, or new york, see new things and meet new people. i didnt want to end up going to college with the SHS class of 09.
But i am going to Umass, and i've gotten used to it. It is a great school, and i will get a great education. and when i graduate, and high school friends are selling their body parts to pay off student loans, i'll be virtually debt free. It may not be what i wanted, but its what ive got. And im going to make the best of it the best damn way i can.

I have many leather bound books, and my appartment smells of rich mohagany.
Pretentiousness. It seems as if at this point in my life, i am completely surrounded by pretentious people, and i have no idea why. It bothers me to no end when people say things, when they plan their sentences, so people will think they are cool or sophisticated or fucking fantastic. I don't understand why people can't just be content with thinking that they are special, why do we have to hear about it, and tell you that you are special? Isn't it enough to know for yourself?
There are some people i am friends with who have this particular affliction. I think why i am only noticing it now is because everyone is freaking out over the stress of hearing back from colleges, questioning what they will do with their lives, and basically wondering who the fuck they are. It seems that this brings out the pretentiousness in everyone. They ( i'm generalizing this little rant because the last thing i need right now is more drama in my life) "casually" bring up in conversation something that makes them look ironic, in an " i listen to bright eyes and wear skinny jeans" kind of way, or say things that they think will make them look impressive. What i don't understand is why they think we care which drugs they have done or who they have jammed with in their basement? i'm sorry but the fact of the matter is as hard as you try, you would be a lot more impressive if you didnt tell us how impressive you are.
Another example. Someone, who is in their 30s, so you would think they would have outgrown this high school bragging crap, that i know feels the need to express their great wealth of knowlege everytime they open their mouth:
Me: "I just bought the new Kings of Leon cd. I love it. you should get it"
Her: "I've had that on my Ipod for like months. i liked them before anyone else did."
Me: "I'm really excited they are making a movie out of that michael Chabon book."
Her: "Michael Chabon, he wrote Yiddish Policemens Union and Kavalier and Clay. I've read all his books."
ughhh. grow up!
watch this and youll know what i mean:

Becuase I'm a Wanderlust King

This beautiful man wrote a lovely little diddy that inspired this little rant i am about to go on. I am one of the most restless souls i have ever met. I have no desire to stay in one place for too long, or do one thing for longer than necessary. I'm always anxious to be in a new place with new people and new sights smells sounds feelings etc etc. Especially with college coming up, it has made me realize that i'm always lusting to wander, to be somewhere foreign.
Alot of people in my grade are and always will be townies. Not that there is anything wrong with it, but they love Scituate/Boston, and have no intention of ever living somewhere else in their whole lives. Thats something i cannot possibly fathom. I have lived in Boston for 18 years. I love this city, but 18 years in the same place? It almost hurts me, pains me, to think that there is so much territory out there that i have not touched. My mark on the map is like a fucking grain of salt on 10,000 beaches.
I have been fortunate enough to have traveled a bit thus far in my glorious youth. Not many people can say they have been to England once and Italy three times before they were 18, and i am really grateful for that. Some of the best expierences of my life have been getting mind blowingly lost in the streets of York or getting shit on by pigeons in Rome, but its not nearly enough for me. I'm thirsty thirsty thirsty for more culture. I cant get enough of it.
I want to have tea with this man and hear about his life and understand the look in his eyes

I want to wipe this fucking adorable babies little nose and then give them some candy to keep that smile on their faces

I want to make music with Gypsies

and not wear shoes and drink vodka with russians and go clubbing with eurotrash and feed the hungry and nurse the sick and get lost in some other culture and pay for things in euros and eat lots of foreign food and always be on a plane and never be in the same place for too long and go where nobody knows my name but make them remember it and make wine in the italian countryside and smoke cigarettes in paris even though i dont smoke and meet people and just go i really really really just want to go.

my main man
If this man, W.H. Auden, wasn't dead at this precise moment, I would track him down and force him to spill the contents of his brain, empty his soul, and talk to me for hours. I have never been more fascinated with a man than i am with him. There are about 5 people that i would do anything to have a nice porkchop dinner and share a bottle of wine with, and he is for sure one of them. He is a poet, and the one of the only poets that i have felt this strong and intense connection with. Anyways, he really kicks ass, and if you haven't, please read his work. it will do a body good. i got inked
(that's my wrist)So i guess i have jumped on the bandwagon and got a tattoo. I didnt really do it for anyone else but myself, or to be "cool" or anything, but i guess that is just how it will look to some people. I am a big proponent of the attitude of not caring what anyone thinks, and most of the time i don't. But the reality is, however awesomely out of this world i may seem, i am human, and therefore i do care what people think of me. What bothered me most about getting my tattoo was not that people would judge me or whatever, but it was people telling me i'm going to regret it. Suprisingly, my parents (maybe minus my father), were pretty calm about the whole thing. But it was people i didn't know very well, my boss and teachers, and even friends who thought that maybe they knew better than me. I think what bothered me most about the whole situation was the fact that nobody can tell you how to feel about something except yourself, and getting this tatto felt right and meaningful and perfect. Even if for some reason in 20 years i regret it, i will look back on it and think about this time in my life when it meant something, it's a georgeous part of my youth and even if i regret it (which i don't think i will) that doesnt mean it will loose it's meaning.
I would never get a tattoo if it didnt mean something. This one does. An elephant with it's trunk up is a sign of good luck, but thats a superficial meaning. It reminds me of my family and my heritage, something that will never get old and i will never get sick of. When my grandmother (my dad's mother) was young, she had an elephant pendant she got in Sicily and it was her good luck charm. She eventually lost it and was heartbroken, so my grandfather who was a dentist made her another one out of the gold filling used for cavaties. He made one for each of my uncles when they were born, and each grandchild got one as well. My grandfather now being dead, i can't think of a better homage than this. I'm sure if he was still alive he would shun me for getting a tattoo, but he isnt, so he'll just have to be pissed from beyond the grave.
I didnt really write this post do validate what i did or get any closure, i was just trying to make the point that i dont think people have the right to tell me how i'm going to feel in 20 years or what decisions i should make, and they have no right to affect my actions in any way. This also isnt a run of the mill teenage angsty Fuck tha police rant either, i just thought i'd share how i felt.
So bottom line: Fuck tha police

What happens when everything has been taken from you and all you have left is your pack of cigarettes and a really long driveway
i wrote this short story after about 7 years of observing the person i based the story on. so here it is.
He had not been happy in a very long time. There were brief periods of contentment, but never the kind of unadulterated bliss that brings with it unbearable lightness of self. No- he hadn’t felt that in a very long time.
The sorrow he felt had entered like the plague on that October day, through his nostrils, mouth and eyes, coursing it’s way down his trachea and leaving it’s mark in his retinas. Burning, burning, burning, always-
It had settled in his core, taking up residence in his arthritic bones, with every bending of his joints and crack of the knuckles, he released it into his bloodstream, like a quick poison bringing speedy death.
He stood at the top of his long driveway with his almost finished cigarette threatening to burn the skin between his pointer and middle finger. But like most other things, he was numb to it. Sometimes, or more like every afternoon, he would pace up and down this driveway. It was if pacing up and down the cracked tarmac would bring some sort of resolution. He felt that by reaching the end of the driveway he would arrive at a conclusion of sorts, and every time he was disappointed when he didn’t, and had to turn around and walk back with shuffling steps filled with despair. Once he reached the top he turned around- down again.
He fantasized about reaching the end of his driveway and having a car there waiting for him, waiting to take him away to some comfortable place, somewhere warm and compact and comprehensible. Somewhere not here, not scratchy and stark and baffling. Somewhere-
Maybe he did this because he had nothing better to do. Maybe because watching the hours melt away or the seasons change before his eyes would alter something, or make anything better.
This past year everything that could have possibly gone wrong did. Dead son, lost job, it went on and on. It wasn’t that he didn’t have anything left to live for- that wasn’t the case. The damnable weight he felt pressing on his rotting soul wasn’t the result of fatalistic or suicidal thoughts. It was his desire. Desire for hope, salvation, even some form of fucking comfort.
He was the grape in the proverbial vineyard of life. Waiting to be crushed, waiting for his insides to squeeze through the toes of whatever sadistic fucker decided to play God. Everything that made him whole was slowly being taken away. As he flicked his cigarette away, he looked up at the sky and with whatever bit of passion or fervor he had left he screamed
- Just do it you motherfucker, and then at last,---
He turned around and walked back up the driveway.

Attention all future parents of America

Don't raise your kids to be douchebags. there are far too many of them as it is, and they dont need your help. Today in journalism we were talking about what our kids would be like, and i realized that as long as my kids arent douchebags, i will be a happy parent.
I want to raise my kids along the same lines my parents raised me. Respectful, individual, open minded, and slightly vulgar. (A little vulgarity never hurt anybody, and if your vulgarity drives people away, you wouldnt really want to be friends with them in the first place would you?) I want my kids to be their own people, to form their own opinions about the world and not to be naive, selfish, ignorant, or annoying little fuckers.
It's pretty unbelievable that my kids wont grow up to be top notch people, seeing as how i am classy as fuck and my husband will have to be too, but if for some reason something goes wrong, and i end up with a sucky kid, im sure i will love them anyways. And i probably wont think they are sucky since their my kid, but im sure other people will. So this is a little warning to all my friends and family who will someday be parents. If/when you have kids, and i see that your kids are showing since of douchiness, im going to do you a favor and warn you, beucase its better to nip it in the bud while their still young.
You might say i am hypocritical saying that i want my kids to be their own person, while still training them not to suck. Well heres how i see it. It will be my job as a parent to raise my kids right, and do everything in my power to make sure they lead happy and healthy lives. Think of how much happy and healthier they would be if they werent douches! My biggest fear in life is that my kids will be that person at the party with the tribal tattoo on the bicep, the popped coller, and the backwards baseball cap doing beer bongs every 5 minutes while trying to catch glimpses of himself reflected off the keg. And im sorry if this offends anyone, im sure there are some people like those discribed above who are very nice.
Anyways, bottom line, try your utmost hardest to raise quality children. Or ill be really pissed.

a word of advice from my favorite author
"And we will be ready, at the end of every day will be ready, will not say no to anything, will try to stay awake while everyone is sleeping, will not sleep, will make the shoes with the elves, will breathe deeply all the time, breathe in all the air full of glass and nails and blood, will breathe it and drink it, so rich, so when it comes we will not be angry, will be content, tired enough to go, gratefully, will shake hands with everyone, bye, bye, and then pack a bag, some snacks, and go to the volcano."

My reaction to Slumdog

So i saw Slumdog Millionaire over the weekend. Without sounding redundant, brilliant movie, brilliant script, brilliant acting, brilliant soundtrack, brilliant cinematography. But this movie really made me realize something i sort of only vaguely recognized before. For some unexplainable reason, i think Indian people are BEAUTIFUL. Even what would normally be considered an ugly Indian person, is somehow just absolutely gorgeous because they are indian. I'm sure im not explaining this in an intelligent or clear way, but i truly think that Indian poeple are the most beautiful people on the planent.
It's not just Indian men either, indian women are probably even more beautiful than their opposite sex. For example, Freida Pinto, who plays Latika in the movie, is perhaps one of the most stunning individuals ever. Also, Aishwarya Rai is another stunning Indian actress. I swear, something about Indian women bring out the lesbian in me.
Im almost positive that this reaction is NOT what Danny boyle had in mind when he made Slumdog, but alas, what can you do?

Small Country

So i got a Mcsweeney's gift certificate (best freaking present ever) from my mom for Christmas, and amongst various other publications, i bought a book of stories called Noisy Outlaws, Unfirendly Blobs, and Maybe Some Other Things That Aren't as Scary, Maybe, Depending on How You Feel About Lost Lands, Stray Cellphones, Creatures from the Sky, Parents Who Disappear in Peru, a Man Named Lars Farf, and One Other Story We Couldn't Quite Finish, So Maybe You Could Help Us Out. long title.
Anways, the first story is called Small Country by Nick Hornby (he wrote About a boy, high fidelity, other good stuff). The story is basically about this boy who realizes that his town is actually a country sandwiched somewhere between France, Switzerland and Italy. Its the smallest country ever, consisting of only a couple houses, a school, a cafe, and a football pitch. Anyways, it sort of got me thinking about what if Scituate was its own country?
Pros:
1. You basically know everyone in your country
2. you get a stamp on your passport by going to Cohasset
4. it would be really easy to be dubbed the country's greatest basketball player or french speaker or sandwich maker etc etc
5. our national anthem would probably be something by lil wayne or taylor swift, based purely on the musical interests of the population of Scituate
6. Officer Wood for president?
cons:
6. Officer Wood for president?
conclusion: no thanks.

Solid as Barack

Inauguration day! Regardless of your political views, you have to admit that this is one of the most historic and emotional days in our lives so far. I honestly feel like a pregnant woman right now, i am so emotional over it. Solidad whatsherface cant even say the words Obama, black, and president without me weepy uncontrollably.
Part of the reason this election means so much to me is becuase it is the only one where i have been sort of old enough to really get involved and be educated on the issues. Before this year i quite frankly didnt give a flying fuck about our country and couldnt wait to move to Europe after i graduated college. I still cant wait to live in that villa in Tuscany, but i think some of the patriotism that Bush sucked out of me might be returing. Thats not to say that i will start wearing American flag t shirts and slap on a God Bless America sticker next to my UVM one on my car, but i am slowly but surely lessing the somewhat disdaining relationship i had with America.
Listen, i know Obama comes with his cons. Opposition to gay marriage, celebrity status etc etc. But i also know that regardless of how he acts out his term(s) in office, he will still be the nations 1st black president, and thats pretty fucking rad.
What i guess i am trying to say is dont take this day for granted. What is happening is amazing and realizing that is pretty important. Without sounding cliche or corny or whatever, i really feel like this is a step in the right direction for our country. And who knows, maybe in four years a really ignorant former miss Alaska can run for VP......oh wait...

All the cool kids are doing it

I have given in to peer pressure and finally created a blog. I guess the reason for my hesitation before was that i thought it was a bit egotistical to think people would actually want to read all about me. I hate people who put themselves on display, saying "look how funny i am" or "look at what a cool life i have" or "look how many times i can use the words black and broken corresponding to the condition of my heart"
But alas, most of the people i know who have blogs actually have interesting, funny, or insightful things to say (with a few minor, and cringe-worthy exceptions.) i havent really even decided if i will share this with anyone yet, and part of the reason i am doing it is becuase Maura is always telling me i should write so i can be a famous script writer and buy her a villa in Tuscany. Even though that isnt what i want to do with my life, Tuscany sounds pretty fucking good right about now.
So i guess it all boils down to the fact that i am bored, anxious, and have a huge store of word vomit that has no place to go. So this blog is the toilet to my word vomit. I will projectile it here.
